The Vineyards

The Perfect Setting 🇦🇷

Our home base in Argentina is comprised of two vineyards, located in the heart of the Uco Valley, at the foot of the majestic Andes mountain range. The vineyards are at altitudes of 1,040m and 1,095m respectively. These altitudes provides the natural acidity required to craft wines that age beautifully with layered complexity.

Los Chimangos

The first of our vineyards is located in Los Sauces, found at a height of 1,040m, adjacent to a small natural stream which flows from the glacial runoff from the Andes. The soil is characterized by an abundant gravel and stones top layer with sandy clay subsurface. Average temperatures are a little cooler than our second vineyard, lending natural freshness to the wines.

The natural vicinity is filled with many cactus plants, lending hints of succulent notes to the fruit. Particularly well suited to our Rhône varietals, we also produce well balanced Bordeaux varietal wines from this beautiful vineyard. The location is also frequented by los chimangos (hence the name of the vineyard), the local species of falcon, in search of the rich and varied bounty provided by the biodiversity of the land.

Los Lobitos

Our second vineyard can be found in the Los Chacayes IG, an area renowned for its fine wines. It is named for the “little wolves” (South American foxes) that regularly stroll through the rows of vines. At an altitude of 1,095m we produce our finest Bordeaux varietal Gran Reservas from this mineral rich vineyard. The topsoil is comprised of 70-80% rocks with the remaining volume primarily occupied by coarse particles of sand.

With naturally great water drainage combined with its physical characteristics, the vineyard enables the production of highly concentrated, low yield complex grapes. In this vineyard, wines produced tend to be highly aromatic with ample acidity, and have very high levels of polyphenols that provide the strength needed to handle a long aging process in oak barrels. This type of soil is perfect to naturally obtain powerful and intense wines.

Our Partner Vineyard sites in Spain and Italy

Priorat, Catalunya— Vineyards around Porrera and Torroja del Priorat 🇪🇸

Our partner in Priorat is the visionary Dominik Huber, who along with his incredible team at Terroir al Límit, has reinvented the winemaking philosophy in the region. We believe that Terroir al Límit is producing the most elegant and expressive wines in the Priorat and hence we are proud to partner with Dominik and his team in producing our Els Turons wine.

Our wines are produced from grapes sourced from two vineyards around the villages of Porrera and Torroja del Priorat. The Porrera vineyard is the source of our Garnatxa grapes, while Torroja del Priorat sources the Carinyena grapes. Both areas are rich in the famed llicorella (black slate) soils, while the vineyard around Torroja has an under layer of clay. These famed soils provide the mineral rich ingredients to craft outstanding wines.

With a philosophy firmly grounded in the winemaking traditions and history of the Mediterranean, the Terroir al Límit team are relentless in pursuing and emphasizing elegance, rather than overly extracted wines.

The wines are produced with gastronomy in mind and focus on mineral rich fruit, the purest possible expression of the soils of the vineyards. This philosophy of making wine from healthy, lively grapes without additives, and with the sole goal of expressing the true character of the place meant that Terroir al Límit was our ideal partner in Spain. And to encourage transparency in the wines, farming is fully organic and strictly manual. The unique soils in the priorat combined with a dry, healthy climate at high altitude, allows for grapes to slowly ripen during the growing season and produce wines of stunning elegance and complexity, the perfect combination for Mediterranean cuisine.

Montalcino, Toscana 🇮🇹

Making wine in the storied hills of Tuscany, amidst the cypress trees, has long been a dream. And to have that dream become a reality and make a Brunello di Montalcino leaves us speechless. But of course, doing so required a partner that has a vision, passion and sensibility that matches ours, and in Andrea Polidoro, we found the perfect match.

Andrea is the winemaker extraordinaire for Cupano, and the philosophy of the winery is one that matches our own. With certified organic vineyards, the aim is to produce wines for aging, and which exhibit all of the characteristics of the terroir with evolution, elegance and complexity in mind. With limited acreage, meticulous care of the vines, indigenous yeasts, aging on the fine lees in barriques bourguignonnes, no filtration, and no clarification — the wines are quite simply, spectacular.

The Cupano estate is relatively close to the Mediterranean— just 30 km from the sea. This provides the advantage of a temperate climate, with cooling sea breezes, and the nearby Ombrone River flowing under the hill. The terroir, made up of sandy clay with a large substructure of cobble stones, is quite unique in Montalcino.

The Ombrone river used to pass across the land until the tectonic shift activated by Mount Amiata, a nearby ancient volcano, pushed the hill up. This left the river flowing down the valley and leaving all sediments behind, resulting in this fantastically stony hill with good drainage, high mineral content and a terroir that befits the enchanting view.

The roots of history in this region run deep, with stunning views and simply incredible wines. We know you will love Ombra d’Amiata as much as we do!
